Is your Property Prepared for new Energy Rules?

Every property for rent in England and Wales must have a minimum EPC rating of E from April 2018, otherwise the landlord could be open to enforcement action.

The rules apply to domestic and non-domestic properties, and the Government has just issued official guidance for non-domestic property landlords.

You can read the guidance in full by clicking here.

We are hoping for official guidance relating to domestic properties to be released any day now, but in the meantime we would advise the following:

  • Check the current EPC rating of your properties.
  • If you haven’t had an EPC for a while (they last for 10 years) it’s a good idea to get a new one to check the current rating.
  • Start identifying ways of improving the energy efficiency of your property so work can be done in plenty of time ahead of the new rules coming into force in 2018.
